Mercury 40/50/60 FourStroke oil capacity and specs
Reviewed 1 primary sourceSee sources
For the four-cylinder, 995 cc Mercury 40, 50 and 60 hp FourStroke family in manual 90-10223083 509, the engine-oil capacity is listed as 3.0 L. Match your owner’s manual before using that figure; other engines with the same horsepower can differ.

Oil capacities and specifications
| Specification | Manual value |
|---|---|
| Engine oil capacity | 3.0 L (manual also prints 3 US qt) Keep the manual’s rounded source figures; they are not exact unit equivalents. Set the final level by the dipstick with the engine stopped and upright, and do not overfill.[1] |
| Engine oil recommendation | NMMA FC-W 25W-40 synthetic blend outboard oil The manual also permits the specified FC-W 10W-30 outboard oil; see printed pages 40–41 for temperature guidance. Engine oil is separate from lower-unit lubricant.[1] |
| 108 mm (4-1/4 in.) gearcase lubricant capacity | Approximately 710 mL (24 fl oz) Only the 108 mm gearcase described in this manual. Follow its vent-hole filling procedure; horsepower alone does not identify a gearcase.[1] |
| Spark plug | Champion RA8HC The specification in this reviewed manual, not a substitute-part or current-parts-catalog recommendation.[1] |
| Spark plug gap | 1.0 mm (0.040 in.) For the plug and engine family specified in manual 90-10223083 509.[1] |
| Displacement / cylinders | 995 cc (60.8 in³) / 4 cylinders A 40 hp engine with another displacement or cylinder count is outside this reference.[1] |
| Full-throttle RPM range | 5500–6000 RPM For the reviewed 40/50/60 FourStroke family; not a propeller-selection recommendation.[1] |
Using the oil and gearcase figures
Engine oil and gearcase lubricant fill different systems. Use the type and procedure for the selected system; do not use the engine-oil figure for the lower unit.[1]
Mercury lists the engine-oil capacity as both 3.0 liters and 3 US quarts. Those rounded figures are preserved as printed, not treated as an exact conversion. The dipstick determines the final level.[1]
The smaller gearcase is labeled 83 mm (3-1/4 in.) in the specification table but 87.3 mm (3-7/16 in.) in the maintenance heading. We do not resolve that identification conflict or give a small-gearcase fill result. Ask Mercury or a dealer to confirm the exact gearcase and manual.[1]
Which engines this does not cover
- Horsepower and the manual’s publication year do not establish an engine serial-number range. This page does not claim that every 2009 engine, or every 40/50/60 hp engine, uses these specifications.[1]
- Other manual editions, three-cylinder engines, two-strokes, jets, unknown gearcases and replacement lower units are not mapped here. Match the exact application through Mercury before servicing.[1]
